Structural vs wildland firefighting boots

Structural firefighting boots are built for high heat, water penetration risk, and chemical resistance in building fire environments. They are typically taller (above-ankle), heavier, and have outsoles rated to 300°C contact temperature. Wildland firefighting boots prioritise terrain grip and extended wear comfort over maximum heat resistance — they are lower cut, lighter, and better suited for rough outdoor terrain. The Voelkl ONE FF is specifically designed for forest and brush firefighting where mobility matters as much as protection.

In Europe and most Middle East and African markets, firefighting boots must meet EN 15090:2012. Yes, for structural firefighting. Gore-Tex® membranes in firefighting boots serve two functions: preventing external water from entering (keeping feet dry during firefighting operations involving hose use), and providing a breathable barrier that reduces moisture build-up from sweat. In hot climates like the UAE, the breathability aspect is particularly important — non-breathable boots cause heat exhaustion much faster. The Voelkl ONE uses Gore-Tex® Extended Comfort, and the Leutnant Pro uses Gore-Tex® Performance Comfort, both optimised for demanding firefighting environments.
