How to Choose a Viking Firefighting Suit

Selecting the right firefighting suit depends on the hazard type, the applicable standard, your operational role, and the environment your crews work in. Viking covers four distinct categories — here is a practical guide to matching the right suit to the right job.

EN 469 Level 1 vs Level 2

EN 469:2020 defines two performance levels. Level 2 is the higher specification — required for interior structural firefighting (direct fire attack). It specifies greater heat transmission resistance (HTI24 ≥ 9, HTI12 ≥ 3) and higher steam resistance. Level 1 suits are adequate for support and exterior roles but should not be used for interior attack. All Viking IGNIS suits are certified to Level 2.

Proximity vs approach suits — what is the difference?

Proximity suits (EN 1486) use aluminised outer fabric to reflect intense radiant heat — they are designed for close approach to open flames such as aircraft fires (ARFF) or large fuel fires where radiant heat levels exceed what a structural suit can handle. Approach suits offer intermediate protection for scenarios where radiant heat is significant but brief or at greater distance. For airport fire services, civil aviation authority depots and petrochemical facilities in Egypt and Africa, Viking proximity suits are the standard specification.

What certifications do Viking firefighting suits carry?

Viking structural firefighting suits are certified to EN 469:2020 Level 2 — the highest performance tier for interior structural firefighting. Wildland suits carry EN 15614. Are Viking suits compatible with SCBA breathing apparatus?

Yes. Viking structural and wildland suits are designed with SCBA compatibility in mind — the collar, wrist seals and waist overlap accommodate standard EN 137 open-circuit SCBA sets. The IGNIS suit range is also compatible with Viking's own Nomex hood (EN 13911) and structural gloves (EN 659), which together provide a complete certified system with no thermal bridges at the interface points.

Can Viking gloves, hoods and suits be worn as a compatible system?

Yes — Viking designs its PPE as a complete system. The EN 659 structural gloves, EN 13911 Nomex hood and EN 469 Level 2 suit are certified to work together, with the hood and glove cuff engineered to overlap the suit without leaving gaps.
