Both ATEX and IECEx certify equipment for use in explosive atmospheres, but they apply in different regions. ATEX is the European Union directive (required for EU member states). IECEx is the international scheme — recognised in UAE, GCC, Australia, South Africa and most countries outside the EU. Intrinsically safe (IS) equipment limits the electrical energy in the circuit so it cannot ignite an explosive atmosphere — even under fault conditions. Explosion proof (Ex d) equipment contains any ignition inside a heavy enclosure that can withstand an internal explosion. IS equipment is lighter, smaller and easier to carry; explosion proof tends to be used for fixed installations. For personal flashlights in oil & gas or fire service use, IS is the correct classification.
